Every Sunday afternoon, our Hymns & Heritage hour fills the request inbox faster than almost any other programme. There is something about the old songs — “It Is Well,” “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” “Blessed Assurance” — that reaches people in a way newer music sometimes cannot.
Songs carried across generations
Part of it is memory. These hymns were sung by grandparents and great-grandparents, in village churches and city cathedrals, through wars and famines and quiet ordinary Sundays. To sing them is to join a long line of the faithful who sang the same words in their own storms.
Theology you can sing
The old hymns were often written to teach. Their verses carry deep truth about God’s character, faithfulness, and grace — truth that lodges in the heart precisely because it is set to melody. We remember what we sing long after we forget what we merely heard.
