There is something about the old songs &mdash; &#8220;It Is Well,&#8221; &#8220;Great Is Thy Faithfulness,&#8221; &#8220;Blessed Assurance&#8221; &mdash; that reaches people in a way newer music sometimes cannot.<\/p>\n<h2>Songs carried across generations<\/h2>\n<p>Part of it is memory. These hymns were sung by grandparents and great-grandparents, in village churches and city cathedrals, through wars and famines and quiet ordinary Sundays. To sing them is to join a long line of the faithful who sang the same words in their own storms.<\/p>\n<h2>Theology you can sing<\/h2>\n<p>The old hymns were often written to teach. Their verses carry deep truth about God&#8217;s character, faithfulness, and grace &mdash; truth that lodges in the heart precisely because it is set to melody.
